Mandalay mixes the legacy of Burma’s last historical capital with the energy of the country’s current epicenter of Burmese culture and commerce. The old city wall at Mandalay is marvelously preserved, and a handful of worthy attractions like Mandalay hill, the iconic U Bein Bridge, “the world’s largest book,” and a few noteworthy temples make a stop in Mandalay a good time. It’s also a central location to launch to Bagan, Inle, or Northern Shan State from.
See itinerary below for more details.
1 Day in Mandalay
Upon arrival in Mandalay, you will drive directly to AMARAPURA to visit Mahagandayone Monastery, home to some 800 monks and one of the most prestigious monasteries in Myanmar. Afterwards, you will take a stroll the historic U Bein Bridge, originally built in 1851, spanning over the Taungthaman Lake. Proceed to your hotel for check-in. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit Mahamuni Pagoda, Mandalay’s most fabled religious monument where you will have an awe-inspiring view of a Buddha image covered with layers and layers of gold paper.
Continue to Shwe Nan Daw Kyaung (or Golden Palace Monastery) to marvel at a superb traditional wooden building and Kuthodaw Pagoda (also known as the world’s largest book), consisting of 729 marble slabs engraved with Buddhist scriptures. If time permits, visit a craftsman’s workshop to see Kalaga tapestries being created. Be sure to watch the sunset from Mandalay Hill. Enjoy dinner at your hotel and overnight stay in Mandalay.
