Summary

Yangon (Rangoon) was the capital of Myanmar from colonial times until 2005, and is still the country’s most bustling city with a population of over 7 million. It is the home of Shwedagon, one of the world’s most famous pagodas, and is the best place to see the diverse mosaic of Myanmar’s 135 ethnic groups. Yangon also boasts magnificent British edifaces, cathedrals, mosques, Hindu temples, and a Jewish synagogue, all of which contribute to the city’s complex ethnic, religious, and political history. Yangon is the most convenient place to enter and exit the country, and a must-see for any visitor to Myanmar.

Bago (Pegu) is located 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Yangon on the old highway to Mandalay, and is the ancient center of the Mon kingdom. Also known historically as Hanthawaddy, Bago was founded by two Mon brothers in 825, and has placed a significant role in the region’s history, being ruled at various times by the Burmese, Portugese, and British. A reconstruction of the Kanbawzathadi Palace (originally constructed in by King Bayinnaung in 1556), its sister museum, and the massive shwethalyaung Buddha statue (thought to be built in 994) are among the sites that draw visitors to Bago.
